Rains Save Tank Bund After Immersion.The APPCB carried out a water quality check in Hussainsagar Lake after the culmination of all the idol immersions. They collected water samples from different points in the lake to examine the effects of idol immersions on the water quality of the lake.
The APPCB carried out a water quality check in Hussainsagar Lake after the culmination of all the idol immersions. They collected water samples from different points in the lake to examine the effects of idol immersions on the water quality of the lake. The samples were collected from the sample points before immersion, during and after immersion.
The sample points were:
1. Opp. NTR Park, Platform No.1
2. Opp. NTR Park, Platform No.2
3. Necklace Road
4. Near Lepakshi Handicrafts
5. Near Buddha Statue (Midstream – Control Point)
The Central Pollution Control Board has issued certain guidelines for ascertaining the water quality. The physic-chemical parameters that were analysed such as, pH, DO, BOD, COD, Conductivity, Turbidity( Suspended Solids), TDS ( Total Dissolved Salts) and metals.
The results of the lake were, not much variation in pH values, the TDS values increased in the lake, the dissolved oxygen was recorded between 2mg/l to 3.6 mg/l before immersion and after immersion the values were 1.8 to 5.3 mg/l.
After immersion even the COD values ranged between 62-106mg/l. The baseline concentration of COD in Hussainsagar Lake is 90mg/l and additional 50mg/l was added after the immersion. The presence of heavy metals was insignificant, it was at a rate of 0.1mg/l which is the minimum detection level.
The conclusions to the study were, due to heavy rains the water levels rose in the lake which caused dilution of the pollutants. The water that was present near the Buddha Statue showed nil negative impact due to the immersion. The water is being monitored for further assessment.
