Around the world, tourism is a trillion dollar sector with over one billion tourists a year worldwide and five to six billion tourists domestically. United Nations’ (UN) World Tourism Day is celebrated on September 27 each year. The day aims to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic values.
The 2013 theme for World Tourism Day is Tourism and Water: Protecting our Common Future. As the most widely celebrated global day for tourism, it represents a unique opportunity to raise awareness of tourism’s role in water access and shine a spotlight on the sector’s contribution to a more sustainable water future.
There are many locations, places and areas which signifies, historical, socio-cultural, traditional, recreational, aesthetic, divine, as well as political perspectives.
One must experience, practically and theoretically, certain places to understand the relative importance and various aspects of social life’s customs, habits etc. This is only possible through “Look and See” approach which facilitates to know the perspectives of the place concerned.
Tourism is a huge and rapidly growing industry, an unseen export earning, immense amounts of foreign exchange without any vital or tangible loss of revenue and employment in most of the countries.
India, being the land of historical and archaeological interests has a great potential for tourism, because of its historical monuments, wild life sanctuaries and beach resorts which attract tourists from all over the world. India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) provides a wide range of services through out the country.
Operation Europe and Operation USA proved successful and won an enviable reputation in the world.
ITDCS first film Destination India won the National Award in 1973. There are few other films like Destination Delhi, Woven Dream and Destination Bombay, who proved their excellence.
Detrimental Impact Of Tourism
Tourism no doubt can be very beneficial to the economy of the host destination but there are many thorns attached which inevitably brings environmental and cultural degradation. It has various shades as various people enjoy in various types of locations. Some many enjoy in a jungle aloof with a little more than the bare necessities, while others prefer a beach front luxurious hotel with all the comforts and convinces at home.
