On Saturday, Krishnam Raju, star of nearly 200 Telugu feature films and political activist, joined administrators and physicians from American Oncology and Citizens Hospital’s multidisciplinary breast cancer team to observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Together they recognised the strength of patients living with breast cancer, honoured the legacy of those taken by it and advocated for increased awareness and education concerning prevention, screening and treatment that follows top global standards.

Saturday’s events not only commemorated all people touched by the long reach of breast cancer but focussed on linking those impacted by breast cancer in the city with the global breast cancer community.
“Breast cancer impacts more women than any other cancer, accounting for a third of all cancers in Indian women. And its incidence is on the rise, particularly in urban areas. Any disease of this magnitude requires confrontation by the global medical community,” commented Dr M Babaiah, MD, AOI’s Medical Director.
The delegates led a walk held in conjunction with Hyderabad Central University and state social welfare board, highlighting the importance for all generations to partake in the stand against breast cancer. Hundreds of students and professors joined the doctors, nurses and patients from AOI and Citizens to promote messages concerning breast cancer awareness, lifestyle changes to prevent its spread and observation of screening guidelines according to the latest medical evidence.
“In India, most breast cancer patients do not reach the doctor until the disease has advanced to late stages, when treatment options are limited and less effective. In order to stem its continued spread, women need to understand the importance of preventive measures like diet and regular screenings,” advised US Board Certified Dr Suguna Chirla, MD, Consultant Medical Oncologist at AOI.
