‘Garvi-Gurjari’ a handloom exhibition organised by Gujarat State Handloom & Handicrafts Development Emporium has started off in city with a wide range of collection including dresses, sarees, jewellery, gift items and furniture-all under one roof! D P Singh, the Hyderabad branch manager said, “We do the exhibition every year during Diwali season. It started on October 19 and will be open for public till November 3. We have a collection with a price range of Rs 10 to Rs 35,000! So, it is for everybody and every age group.

The exhibition has the collection of various traditional hand woven fabrics and dress materials like Patola, Bandhani, Chaniya cholia and Kedia. while Patola, one of the famous silk saree weaving techniques from Patan, shows the beauty of double Ikat and the hard work of the artisan as it takes six months to one year for making one saree, various handmade Crochet works in tops, shrugs, skirts are also on sale. It is not only the traditional weaving that has been showcased, but also the design motifs that reflects the tales of rural life of Gujrat.

Apart from exotic dresses, they have a beautiful collection of junk jewellery like bangles designed in colourful threads, neck pieces in stones, white metals, pearls, beads, ear-rings, chandeliers and elaborately designed finger-rings to compliment the festive look. One can match the dress and jewellery with other accessories like bags, purses or small pouches made in vibrant colours and designed with appliqué and mirror work.

In festive season, we not only update our wardrobe but redesign our interiors, one can bring the essence of traditional Gujarat in their homes with embroidered wall hangings, curtains, or very famous Shankar furniture, one of the famous handmade wooden crafts that the state is known for. It was an exhibition where participating artisans have not only come from the villages of the host state but also from Hyderabad to showcase their handicrafts. According to Singh, “We have given the opportunity to all the handloom weavers and artisans who have registered under our organisation. But among 40 stalls, we kept 10 stalls for local artists also. Our purpose of conducting such exhibition is not only keeping alive the weaves and handcrafts, but also maintaining a cultural exchange.”
