Andhra Pradesh Voluntary Health Association (APVHA) in collaboration with All Out from SC Johnson, undertook an awareness campaign in Manikeshwari Nagar community hall on Thursday to encourage the adoption of preventive measures to be taken by public to prevent dengue. The event was titled “Fight dengue for Payal” campaign.

Ratna Joseph, deputy director, public health & family welfare dept, AP addressed school children and spoke about the various effects of a mosquito bite, how dengue spreads, classification of mosquitoes, especially the ones that were harmful to humans, mosquito breeding grounds and preventive measures to be taken to avoid the spread of dengue.
Speaking at the event he said, “In Mumbai, mosquitoes suck nearly 90 litres of blood everyday from human beings. We must all collectively work towards preventing the spread of dengue by protecting ourselves and cleaning our houses and surrounding areas of stagnant water regularly.” The session was attended by over 50 school children and teachers who were also educated by GHMC entomologists on the science behind the growth of a mosquito and the various chemicals used to kill mosquitoes and eradicate their breeding grounds.
The main activities of the program included:
• Awareness drive for residents to educate families about dengue and its prevention
• School contact program that involved reaching out to children so that they understood the dangers of mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and adopt preventive measures
• Workshop and session with health experts to provide medical advice on the prevention and treatment of dengue
12-year-old, Payal Samariya was chosen to be face of this campaign. The focus is on children as agents of change for dengue prevention in their families. Acclaimed actor Sonali Bendre Behl, who has an eight-year-old son herself, is concerned about the well-being of Indian families and is supporting the campaign.
Over the months of October-November, APVHA has been rolling out its awareness programmes through Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and schools to extend its message to local communities. They have been engaging children at various schools in Hyderabad through interactive activities such as discussions, competitions and plays. Additionally at RWAs, the NGO in partnership with All Out from SC Johnson has been conducting street plays and interactions with health experts to engage community audiences and promote dengue prevention amongst families.
