Muharram Observed With Painful Sacrifice, Bibi-ka-Alawa, Muharram Celebrations. Thousands of the Shia community participated in the Muharram procession and took part in the ‘maatam’ by flagellating themselves and beating their chest using sharp blades.

The old city reverberated with cries of ‘Ya Husain’ to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Husain, the grandson of the Prophet. Bibi-ka-Alam procession was taken out on a caparisoned elephant, Rajini on the 10th of Muharram on Friday.
Thousands of people from different corners of the city gathered and the procession started from Bibi-ka-Alawa and ended at Chaderghat.

The city police made elaborate arrangements and monitored the security arrangements. The Bibi-ka-Alam is believed to contain a holy relic. People from different communities participated as they lined up along the route and offered ‘dhattis’ to the Alam.
Mohammed Majid Hussain, mayor, Somesh Kumar, commissioner, GHMC, Syed Altaf Hyder Rizvi, MLC, representatives of the Iranian Consulate, local corporators and other GHMC officials participated in the event.
