With an objective to curb violence against women, Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) is imparting martial arts training classes for all its women employees across the state from Monday onwards. Currently the APSRTC has approximately 10,500 women employees across the state and 4000 in Hyderabad.
On speaking to Ravinder, executive director, Human Resource Development, APSRTC said, “The recent number of crimes on women has become an indicator for us. That is why we thought it would be best for us to train them in karate. This will not only be for their safety but also for the safety of women passengers in the bus.”
The women employees, be it conductors or drivers, will be trained at the APSRTC training school in the city. The APSRTC has six training schools across the state and one in the city. They will be trained on a weekly basis at the schools. “By doing so, not only will the women feel secure but it will also instill a sense of confidence in them,” he added.
According to him, this step is not meant only for the safety of the employees but also for those in the vicinity. If one notices any crimes against women at bus-stops or in the bus, they can spring into action.
