85-year-old Thota Dhana Laxmi’s husband was a World War II solider. Her husband died in 1989 due to ill-health when she was 60-years-old. After his demise, Dhana Laxmi was depending on her son financially. In 2008, she happened to notice an advertisement in a newspaper stating that ex-servicemen widows were eligible for a pension of Rs 400 per month. She heaved a sigh of relief and advised her son to follow up with the concerned Hyderabad Zilla Sainik Welfare Officer.

“My son then produced the relevant defence discharge certificate, death certificate, residential certificate, family member certificate, ration card and other required documents to enroll me as a member of the District Sainik Welfare Office. At that time T Swarna Kumari was the Zilla Sainik Welfare Officer. She was very affectionate and cordial with us. Our work of submitting the respective applications with relevant details were verified by them and forwarded to the directorate for sanction. Within 3 months, we got an intimation from Zilla Sainik office, that I would be getting a pension of Rs 500 per month, which would be credited to the bank. From then on, pension is being regularly credited to my account every month,” said an excited Dhana Laxmi.

She added, “Surprisingly, after a few months, my pension amount of Rs 400 was enhanced to Rs 3000. In addition to this, they also paid arrears from 1-1-1996 to 30-11-1996 at Rs 75 per month, from 1-12-1988 to 30-11-2006 at Rs 200 per month, from 1-12-2006 to 2011 at Rs 400 per month and from 2011 to Rs 3000 per month.”

Dhana Laxmi further said, “In addition to the pension, Sainik Welfare Office is extending various financial concessions to ex-servicemen and their children, including 25 paise bank loan schemes, giving land to the landless and providing employment to the ex-servicemen and reservation to their children. Today I am secure and safe, because of my deceased husband’s pension. What I have to spend is a great satisfaction for me and I remember my husband everyday. He served the army and was a part of World War II which is a pride for me and my children.”
