Status Of Political Science As A Discipline Discussed. The city played host to the 55th All India Conference of the Indian Political Science Association (IPSA) from December 28-30

The city played host to the 55th All India Conference of the Indian Political Science Association (IPSA) from December 28-30. Founded in 1938 by nationalist advocate Govind Ballabh Pant, IPSA, the largest body of political science teachers and scholars in the country, had earlier organised conferences in Lahore (1940), Bombay (1941), Trivandrum (1948), Calcutta (1950), Vizag (1957) and Ahmedabad (1966). This conference was decided to be held in Chennai but was later shifted to Hyderabad. This is being held for the third time in the city. Previously it was organised in 1951 and 1983.

About 700 delegates from various parts of the country participated in the conference. This included senior professors, middle level teachers of the discipline young teachers who joined the profession recently and research scholars pursuing Ph.D and M.Phil courses. The deliberations on various aspects were expected to help the scholars to learn from each other. The discussions would also provide a direction to the teaching community and help in enriching it.

The conference was inaugurated by Justice L Narasimha Reddy, judge, AP High Court who was the chief guest. Prof. RVR Chandrasekhar Rao, former VC, Dr BR Ambedkar Open University, was the guest of honour. The president of the IPSA, Prof. R Thandavan, VC, Madras University, delivered the presidential address at the conference.
Spread over three days, there were seventeen panels which focused upon various themes of the discipline. A few of those included ‘State and Status of Political Science as a discipline’, ‘Discourses on Gender’, ‘Politics of Decentralisation in India’, ‘Democratic Governance’ , ‘Role of Non–State Actors in Politics’, ‘Issues in Contemporary Administration’, ‘Emerging Contours of Global Politics’, ‘International Organisations’ and ‘Politics of Andhra Pradesh’.
On this occasion, a book written by Prof. Sanjeev Kumar Sharma from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut and published by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan -‘Thinking Politically’- was released.
