In our unjust society, struggles for equality, dignity and justice have to reckon with violence, sexual torture and death.

A majority of our poor is engaged in these struggles, which they must wage even as they continue with their everyday lives — making a living, raising children, taking care of the elderly.
The two Tamil plays ‘Vakkumoolam’ and ‘Sudalaiam directed by A Manga attempt at understanding lives led in the shadow of state violence and apathy on the one hand, and in the uneasy yet nurturing glow of sorrowing affection on the other. Both plays are fictional explorations of actual events. KG Kannabiran (1929-2010), the playwright is widely known and recognised for his pioneering role in defining civil liberties and fundamental rights in India.
An important part of his work focused on the defense of free speech and the right of creative writers and poets to practice their craft unfettered by state surveillance. Council for Social Development (CSD), Hyderabad presented the plays that were staged on two days, 28 and 29 December at Vidyaranya School.
