Kite-flying enthusiasts would surely be in for a rude shock this year as the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has cordoned off People’s Plaza from flying kites. The HMDA has begun digging and constructing pillars near People’s Plaza, at the temporary dumping yard for the Balkapur and Banjara dredged material. Presently the work has been entrusted to a private contractor who has been given authority to permit kite-flying and other such activities in the area. Officials from the HMDA have said that the area would be closed until all the dredged material is shifted to its permanent location.

But, on the other hand, the Lake Police officials still haven’t received any such orders regarding kite-flying as yet.

An inspector from the Lake Police, Necklace Road Wing said, “There is some work going on in that area right now. But we still haven’t received any orders from the authorities. We only know that the work is being carried out by the HMDA.

Every year, thousands of eager kite-flyers throng the People’s Plaza from the early hours till late in the night. Several kite festivals are organised there. Hundreds of people also participate in rangoli competitions and other cultural activities.
