Hyderabad: Telangana Universities’ teachers and non-teaching staff here on Wednesday lambasted the government for its callous attitude towards the allocation of block grants to the universities in the state. In a round table conference organised by the joint action committee of the Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff Association of Telangana universities at Osmania University (OU), teachers unequivocally pressed for enhancement of grants and release of pension arrears.

The teaching and non-teaching fraternity has decided to intensify its protest as the government failed to keep up its promise of resolving the issues. Addressing the audience, Prof. Kodandaram, who spearheaded the Telangana movement, urged teachers to strongly voice their concerns before the government. “Why should we do rounds at the secretariat for the grants? The government has to understand the problems of the universities,” he opined.

He added that teachers have to apprise Governor ESL Narsimhan about the hardships of the universities’ staff. “As a delegation, we will approach the education minister, finance secretary and education secretary to place our demands. If things do not fall in line, we will have to assert ourselves and fight for our benefits,” he said.

Kodandaram also said that the committee should also meet all parties to inform them about the issues in the universities. NVSS Prabhakar, MLA, Uppal Assembly constituency, pledged his support to the teachers. He urged the government to liberalise the universities. “The government has to either totally support the universities with the financial grant or make them financially independent,” he said.

Prof. Suleman Siddiqui, former Vice-Chancellor, OU, called upon the teaching fraternity to generate money through projects and research in order to come out of the crisis. Another former Vice-Chancellor of OU said that the government has to resolve the issues before it goes beyond control. “Why wait till the issues goes out of hand? If issues burst, it will leave a scar on the government,” he said.

Prof. Laxman, OU, blamed former Vice-Chancellors for the poor state of affairs in the universities. He said that the former VCs gave inappropriate figures to the government in order to get the grant. He made it clear that the government is not in a situation to enhance the grant till the next budget session.

Prof. Battu Satyanarayana, chairman, Telangana State Federation of University Teachers' Associations (TSFUTA) said that a rally will be taken out on December 17 and that the universities will observe a bandh protesting against the government on December 30.
