The Thyagaraja Festival conducted at Shankara Mutt, Anandbagh, saw city-based flautist Jayaprada Ramamurthy, daughter of classical musician Prema Ramamurthy, and Pattabhiram Pandit, an AIR artist from Trichy, in performance recently.

Jayaprada Ramamurthy

Jayaprada started off with “Raghunayaka” (Hamsadhwani) using two flutes. She then went on with the fifth and the last Pancharatna keerthana, Thyagaraja’s magnum opus. Then she moved on to “Gnanamosaga Radaa” (Poorvikalyani), “Nagumomu Ganaleka” (Abheri) with a clear ragalapana coupled with majestic swarakalpna, touching the two scales in ragaprastharam. She used two flutes to suit the mandara sthayee and ateetha sthaye and also flowered her recital with Hindusthani raga bhavam.

She was accompanied on the violin by Kokkanda Subrahmanya Sarma, Parupalli Balasubramanyam on mridangam, Bhargava Ram on ghatam and V Kalivaraprasad on morsing.

Jayaprada’s recital was pleasing and it could be said that it was on the lines of Murali Ravam (flute music of Krishna).

A pleasing vocal recital

Pattabhiram Pandit started his recital with Abhogi Varnam “Entha Chalamu Jesi”. He moved on to catchy numbers “Tulaseedalamulachey” (Mayamalava Goula) and “Sadhincheney Oh! Manasa” (Arabhi). He touched another krithi “Ninne Nera Namminaanu” (Panthuvarali). In Arabhi and Pantuvarali krithis he gave a clear ragalapana. He was at his best while taking on “Veda Sastra Purana Vidyala”. To showcase his talent Pattabhiram took up “Vara Narada Narayana” (Vijayasri) and “Neranunchinaanu” (Malavi). He selected “Evari Maata Vinnavo Raavoh” (Kambhoji) as the main piece. He then took Thodi and Sindhubhairavi raga krithis.

Young violinist Peri Thyagaraju gave a good show. Instrumentalists DSR Murthy (mridangam) and Sathish Pathakota (kanjira) handled their respective instruments effortlessly and made the show enjoyable.
