HMDA has a new money-spinner.Everything can be important, if we find its right use. This seems to be the current governing mantra of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).
5,000 litres of STP water sells at Rs 125
Everything can be important, if we find its right use. This seems to be the current governing mantra of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA). With most bore wells in the city having dried up, the Authority is using treated water from Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) for gardening purposes in all the parks that are maintained by it. It is also selling the treated water.
Parks and studios in Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills require thousands of gallons of water every day for their maintenance, which were supplied from the bore wells. Statistics show that nearly 30,000 bore wells have gone dry because of the decline in the ground water levels. Reportedly, the authorities of KBR Park are facing a huge problem to maintain the gardens. They are making use of treated water from STPs.
STPs are located at Saroor nagar, Safilguda, Langar Houz, Mir Alam, Nacharam, Durgam Cheruvu and Hussainsagar, which has two.
These STPs tread 80 million gallons of water every day. As the STPs are stage-3 certified, the water is believed to be hundred per cent free from contamination. The treated water is sent to lakes. However, with the growing demand for the treated water for gardening purposes, the HMDA authorities are keen to cash in on the opportunity to make money.
Two points were setup at Durgam Cheruvu and Hussainsagar, where the treated water is being sold at Rs 125 per 5,000 litres. The HMDA authorities claim that the water is even e-coli bacteria-free.
“We treat the water with chlorine and hypo to get rid of e-coli. We have found out that the treated water is very good for gardening and our tests at Sanjeevaiah Park proved the same. The trend is slowly catching up with other parks too. From the past two months we have been supplying treated water to other parks as well and we are fairly certain that the demand will increase in the summer months,” informed an official with the HMDA.
However, there is a catch-the Authority cannot sell all of the treated water because, it is mandatory, to maintain the desired levels at lakes. The surplus water, however, can be marketed and the authorities are keen to do so to cover part of the humongous Rs 4 crore power bill.
