Audince were left with the lingering memories of the legendary singer MS Subbulaxmi, while Mathangi Satyamoorthy performed at Shankarmath, recently. The Keralaite voice resembled that of the MS in sheer orthodox style of presentation.

Mathangi was trained under noted musician KS Subramaniam for 12 years. Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy awardee, Mathangi is renowned for bold voice and clear diction. She opened her recital with “Sarasija Nayana” (Kambhoji). It was followed by a GNB piece, “Karimukha Varada” (Nata), which was rendered with a convincing neravals.

It was in “Guruleka Etuvanti Guniki” (Gouri manohari), she gave good swarakalpana. But while dealing neravals at “Tatvabodhana” phrase, she split the word Tatva-Bodhana which was a rendition mistake. It was in the sub-main item of Patnam Subramanya Ayyar krithi, “Mariveray Dikkevarayya Raama” (Shanmukhapriya), she show cased her emotive appeal.

Famous Kharaharapriya raga krithi of Thaygaraja, “Pakkala Nilabadi” was the main piece of the day. Ragaalapana is decisive, emotive and swarakalpna rendering proved to be the best. In all as a seasoned artist Mathangi proved her mettle. Ammula Bhavani, PV Ramanamurthy and K Shyam Kumar gave a good instrumental support.
