Rains did not deter citizens from turning in large numbers for the fourth ‘Run For Caste Free India’ held at the People’s Plaza on Tuesday. The run, jointly organised by Shanti Chakra International and the Dalit Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DICCI), was flagged off by Finance Minister Etela Rajender and Union minister for Science Sujana Chowdary. The run culminated at Tank Bund where Telangana folk singer Gaddar garlanded the Ambedkar Statue.

Speaking on the occasion, Etala Rajender said, “We are lucky to celebrate Bharat Ratna awardee Dr Ambedkar’s birthday in Telangana for the first time. Telangana will prosper only if we idealise the thoughts of Ambedkar. I hope the future generations incorporate the seeds of equality proposed by him. On this occasion, I hope that Telangana can become a model for all the other states in implementing the thoughts of Ambedkar.”

This run, which is in its third year, is the brain-child of Ravi Kumar Narra, a Padma Shri awardee and a city based Dalit entrepreneur who shared “Dr BR Ambedkar was a progressive thinker of the modern world who had advocated the annihilation of caste. But the country is still plagued by this evil and it is time that the people take a stance and rid the country of this cancer.”
