The people of the city extended unprecedented support at the eighth edition of ‘2K Pink Ribbon Walk’ at KBR Park in Jubilee Hills on Sunday. Organised by Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation’ (UBF) along with KIMS Hospital and ‘The Association of Breast Surgeons of India’, the ‘Walk’ was flagged off by actress Regina Cassandra along with breast cancer survivor, Madhumita Chakraborty. Upto 3,000 people including families of cancer survivors and a contingent of students from the Old City participated in the campaign.

B Krishnaiah (Chairman KIMS), Dr B Bhaskar Rao (MD & CEO KIMS), Dr P Raghu Ram (President, Association of Breast Surgeons of India & CEO, UBF), Hardayal Prasad (CGM, SBI), Faisal Uddin (Sr Vice-President, Synchrony Financial), Andrew McAllister (British Deputy High Commissioner), K Padmanabaiah (Chairman, ASCI), Ramesh Prasad (Chairman, LV Prasad group) were present at the event.

Dr Ram spoke at the event. “In India, well over one lakh women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year; a staggering number that has overtaken cervical cancer to become the most common cancer affecting the gender,” he said. “Contrary to the western world where breast cancer is common after the age of 50 years, the highest incidence of breast cancer in India is between the ages of 30-50 years; at least two decades earlier,” he highlighted.

“Lack of awareness and absence of an organised national breast cancer screening programme are the main reasons accounting for late presentation. Although mammography is a proven way of detecting it very early in the impalpable stages, it is not a viable option for population based screening in India, said Dr Ram.
