MNJ Institute of Oncology and Regional Cancer Centre, one of the premier cancer centers of the State Government, received highly critical blood component separation equipment, costing about 35-40 lakh from M/s Lions Club of Twin cities, Secunderabad and City based NGO, Helping Hand Foundation, in a unique public private partnership model.

Lions Club and Helping Hand Foundation will ensure supply of blood units sourced by them to the hospital and also take the responsibility of maintaining the equipment for a period of three years to facilitate smooth running of the equipment.

The 300 bedded MNJ Cancer Hospital, which treats thousands of cancer patients coming from across the twin states of Telangana and AP, had only whole blood processing facility so far and there was a dire need to have blood components for the growing needs of the hospital.

Now with blood components available, the hospital and poor cancer patients will stand to benefit, said Dr N Jayalata, Director of MNJ cancer hospital, while thanking the Lions Club of Secundrabad and Helping Hand Foundation for this initiative.

Almost 500 to 600 complex cancer surgeries are done at MNJ Cancer Hospital and the surgical unit itself required 50 units of blood components each day at the hospital.

The average cost of procuring Blood components per patient works out to about Rs 30,000 during the course of treatment and now this cost can be potentially saved according to the medical officer in charge of the blood bank at MNJ Cancer Hospital.

Further with blood components now available poor cancer patients will not have to run around different blood banks to collect blood components and this will save them both money and time and will also help cancer patients in emergency requirements, said Mujtaba Hasan Askari, Founder Trustee of Helping Hand Foundation.
