About 1,500 medical experts participated in the ‘FOGSI-FIGO International Conference on Clinical Challenges in Obstetrics & Gynaecology’ in the city over the weekend.

Unveiling the agenda Dr SShanthaKumari, Organising Secretary, FOGSI FIGO, Member, said, “Wellbeing has been always the priority of our specialisation. Our aim at this conference is to devise Sustainable Development Goals to enhance quality and inject steps forward in tackling women healthcare.”

FIGO President, Prof CNPurandare elaborated on reduction in maternal mortality, family planning and cancer of the cervix. “While spacing is important to reduce maternal mortality, cancer of the cervix is completely preventable if one can look at prevention than cure,” he said.

“Though there has been concern of high caesarean section rates in our country, which is only 17 per cent, the situation is completely different today. What is decided by FIGO is that C-section rates cannot be decided as a cut of point as it varies from the type of patient like high risk, hypertension, diabetes and late marriage,” he said.

Dr Rishma DPai, President FOGSI in her address said that the organisation is discussing ways to strengthen abortion laws in the country. “We will also undertake a large-scale campaign on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS); almost 35 per cent young girls suffer from it today,” she said.
