Osmania University: With kitchen staff numbering 28 and only a handful of security guards hired on contract basis by university officials, the women’s hostel in Osmania University faces a dearth of permanent personnel to cater to over 1,000 students residing in its three blocks.

A student, on condition of anonymity revealed that in certain blocks of the hostel, breakfast is cooked in lesser quantities and is often delayed thereby forcing them to leave to their places of study and work without taking their lunch boxes.

It may come as no surprise that students are required to pay about Rs 16,000 to Rs 20,000 as their mess fee. Despite the amount, they get to consume little food.

When asked, Gori Singh, Superintendent of the hostel explained that with the increase in vegetable prices and the fact that they procure gas cylinders (as a standby in case of emergencies) on a commercial basis, the management is forced to levy higher mess fees from the students. He added that since fuel wood is mostly used to cook food in the hostel kitchens, as many as two cooks often fall sick every alternative day causing problems in running the mess.

An insider from the management of the university shared, “The security staff hired by the officials are too old to guard the women in the hostel. Moreover, in case of crises in the nearby units of the campus, the guards are allocated other duties putting the hostel’s safety at a risk.”

“We raised complaints to the concerned authorities, but no action has been taken,” said the officials
What also threatens the safety of the students is that since not many buses ply in the area, many of them go to the bus stop opposite to the centre of Distance Education through a route beside the hostel, which is poorly lit at night.
