Charminar: The old-world charm of the Old City has now got an added attraction in the form of a new technology. Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs are making major inroads into the Old City. Old lights are being replaced with LED bulbs in circle 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11.

These lights in varying capacity ranging from 18 watts to 190 watts as per the requirement are being installed.

Officials of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) informed that about 10 per cent installation work would be completed soon.
Some areas where the LED lighting are already in place are at Bengaluru road, Srisailam road and Airport road. Few internal streets and roads are left for the work and that is expected to be completed in few months.

LED lights of 18 watts are 777 in number, 35 watts LED lights are about 18, 206 in number, 70 watts LED lights are 50,691 in number, 110 watts lights are 16,061 in number, 190 watts lights are 5,425 which amounts to 91,160 lights installed so far in Old City areas.

GHMC officials said that as part of the LED electrification of street lights, South Zone circles were able to save up to 42 per cent of the total expenditure on electricity bills.

In the year 2016, the total units used in Old City were 52,79, 863 costing about Rs 3,99,16,154 crore. On the other hand, units by the end of December 2017 were recorded to be 30,40,831 amounting to Rs 2,39,36,370 crore. This saved about Rs 1,59,79,384 crore of the government.

GHMC electricity executive engineer Ganesh K said that government could save about 42 per cent of the total expenditure on electricity with the use of LED street lights. People appreciated the installation of LED lights and appealed the government to carry out the same work in internal roads too.
