Santosh Nagar/Babanagar: The twin bin scheme for segregation of dry and wet garbage does not seem to be working. Nine out of ten residents The Hans India spoke to in every colony said that they were mixing both dry and wet waste together.
When queried why they were not following the rules, people gave bizarre answers ranging from ‘what is the use’, ‘lack of time’, ‘garbage collector anyway mixes both in the trolley, so why bother’. Shaik Rizwan, a resident of Babanagar said that garbage collectors come once in two or three days 2-3 days so it is difficult to keep two bins as they get filled.
Md Mujeeb, a resident of Qalander Nagar said that the bins were distributed two years ago. We used the bins initially but when we found that the garbage collectors were just dumping them together we felt it was not necessary.
There have also been instances when a few families started using the bins for growing plants. Md Hussain, a social worker said, “There is a great need for creating awareness among people and also making them insist that the garbage collectors do not mix both when they dump the garbage in the trolley.”
There are a few exceptions for instance, Ratha Kumar Daniyal, resident of 65 Light Santosh Nagar Colony said that by keeping garbage separately there were fewer health problems. He added, “Our family makes it a point to separate waste.” G Shankar, a resident of Kanchanbagh said that the garbage is kept outside the house in a single bin as there is no space in house to keep two bins.
Shekhar a garbage collector of Santosh Nagar said that few people use two bins distributed by GHMC for dry and wet garbage. People still use polythene covers in spite of receiving bins.
