Commuters forced to face scorching sun

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) recently took up the construction of new bus shelters with high quality amenities under Public Private Partnership (PPP), but the construction of new bus shelters is taking a toll on RTC commuters who are forced to stand on the road under the scorching sun. And with the monsoon approaching fast the department has not made any alternate shelter arrangements for the citizens to protect them from heat and rains.

According to the GHMC officials the construction of bus shelters would be completed in six months as per the contract agreement. A total of 826 shelters will be constructed covering the entire city and these 826 have been divided into four grades such as advanced, proficient, basic and minimal bus shelters.
A passenger Divya at Somajuguda bus stop said that though the GHMC has taken up construction of new bus shelter but has not made any alternate provision forcing the citizens to stand in hot sun.
Another passenger Srikanth said that no time schedule has been given for the construction of shelters, if the works were not completed soon then the commuters have to face rains which were due in a week’s time.
RTC Greater Hyderabad zone Executive Director A Purushottam Naik said that GHMC has taken up the upgradation and construction of shelters but as there was no alternative provided, people were forced to stand on the road.
Adwait Kumar Singh, additional commissioner, GHMC, said that the department has started the work to construct 826 bus shelters across the twin cities. He said that in package-I there are 214 shelters, package-II there are 219, package-III and in package- IV there 199 bus shelters.
