ECIL: If online sales have brought the brick and mortar retail clothing on its knees, the advent of Ola, Uber and shared autos are creating havoc closer home. The ECIL X Roads is one of the busiest junctions in the East Zone city and the shared autos are literally forcing the traditional auto drivers out of business.

On an average there are close to 80 shared autos that ply between ECIL to Lal Bazaar and to Neredmet. Khaja, an auto driver says, “At this rate we would have to just stop and think of doing something else. There was a time when we were the most sought after, but now, the shared auto is king.” It is more than a decade since the shared autos made their way into this part of the city and now they occupy the parking space leaving the traditional auto drivers very little area.

Ravi, another auto driver says, “A school teacher who I was dropping for years has now switched to shared auto as they charge less but if one does not mind traveling in inconvenience and crammed space, it is their choice.” Travel in shared autos may not be comfortable but the price suits us, says Lalith Singh a student.
