Ramkisthapuram: The hyacinth removal works at Ramkisthapuram Lake will be starting within two weeks. Corporator Sridevi said that the works worth Rs 11.82 crore would be taken up soon. The lake was in good condition a decade ago but due to sewerage being let into the lake, it has deteriorated.

It may be noted that the lake was in the news last month due to frothing. Just a few years ago, hyacinth was seen only in one part of the lake but over the years it has spread and has covered almost the entire lake area.

The corporator said that the MP, MLA and other elected representatives were willing to support for the rejuvenation of the lake. The actual area was 54 acres but after encroachment the lake was reduced to 39 acres. Locals demanded removal of hyacinth and to stop entry of drainage water into the tank. Locals say that the main reason for the dismal state of the lake was the sewerage that enters the lake from nearby colonies and apartments.

In 2016, a detailed project report was submitted an estimate of Rs 10 crore was proposed for the lake clean up. Residents near the lake are still doubtful if the works would start. R V Nair, a resident of Neredmet says, “We have been hearing about the lake restoration for years but there is no headway. We hope that it will be taken up this time.”
