Rains play truant, vegetable prices shoot up in Telangana

​Parigi: Prices of vegetables, including the green and leafy vegetables, are on the upper side even one month after the commencement of monsoon.

With the exception of tomato, all vegetables are traded between Rs 40 and 60 a kg. However, tomato is sold between Rs 20 and 30 a kg.

Lady finger, coccina, cumbers, beans, cabbage, cauliflower are more or less sold at the same price, between Rs 30 and Rs 40.

The prices of vegetables at weekly shandies that take place at Parigi, Vikarabad, Tandur and Kodangal are also ruling high. The prices will remain jacked up for at least one month from now, it is said.

Drop in imports of vegetables from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra, ground water receding further affecting cultivation of vegetables under bore wells delayed monsoons are said to be the causes for non-availability of vegetables.

If heavy rains are experienced in June and July, it favours the vegetable crops. The middlemen are buying vegetables from farmers, who are busy with agricultural operations, at a throw away price and selling the same at a higher price to consumers.

The farmers are disposing of vegetables to middlemen as they have no time to sit hours together at Rythu Bazars selling vegetables. Market sources say that the prices will come down after September.
