Nacharam: It has been three years since the gymnasium at Nacharam was built but the locals have not had the luxury of using it. The gym boasts of equipment with an investment of Rs 5 lakh and there are about 21 items lying idle. Rajender, sports in charge for Nacharam and Uppal said, “The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation prepared a plan to use a part of community hall space for gyms.

According to the plan, the GHMC would allot funds and corporator would install a gym in the colony community hall which would be beneficial for the local youth. However, with reasons unknown the Nacharam corporator failed to implement the scheme fully. This has led to inordinate delay in the inauguration of the gym.” The Gym equipment is lying idle and it may get rusted and would be of no further use to the youth.

Recently, some of the youth have started questioning the reasons for not opening the gym. They are irked over the fact that the private gyms are charging hefty amount while the government funded gym was rusting out. The youth have decided to hold a meet soon to discuss on taking further action over opening the gym. It would prove highly beneficial to youth from poor and underprivileged sections who can’t afford high prices at private gyms. +

Meanwhile, gym enthusiasts have been complaining but neither the GHMC nor the corporator came to an understanding. “We request the authorities to open the gym and provide us with the facilities. Youngsters will benefit the most by this center,” says Shanker, Ambedkar Nagar resident. If the gym is opened it would benefit people living in Ambedkar Nagar, Bhavani Nagar and few other colonies, says Mallikarjun Rao, a former railway body builder and resident of Ambedkar Nagar, adding, “What is hurting us is the fact that the equipment is lying unused and people are going to gyms in other colonies.”
