Lower-Tankbund locals seek shifting of dumping yard

Lower Tankbund: The GHMC garbage dumping yard located in centre of the city has become a source of accidents, severe inconvenience to the daily road-users and foul smell. The location of the yard next to tourist spots for years, as of late is being opposed by local residents who want it to be shifted immediately to the outskirts.
Some residents told The Hans India that roads leading to the dumping yard were being littered with garbage during transportation of waste in GHMC vehicles. Besides, foul smell emanates forcing the road-users to take precautionary measures. There have been also several accidents involving two-wheeler drivers. Besides, there have been fire mishaps in the yard, causing a scare among the locals. The situation turns serious during the monsoon with the pathways becoming slushy giving scope for accidents. Several hundreds of road-users have been injured in mishaps.
The dumping yard has become an eyesore for lakhs of tourists who pass through the Tankbund area on their way to various beauty spots. On one hand they have to be content with appreciating the beauty spots on the Tankbund on the other have to make a hasty retreat once they cross the Lower Tankbund Road. Hotspots like Snow World, Indira Park and innumerable nearby hotels are visited on a daily basis by tourists/local residents.
A tourist, Rapolu Navin Reddy, while speaking to THI stated that he had come to enjoy local beauty spots like Tankdund, nearby parks. He was unhappy with the foul smell generated by the dumping yard. ‘It is inconvenient to pass-by the Lower Tankbund Road. It will be better if the dumping yard is shifted’, he says emphatically. Another visitor, Taviti Srikanth, informed THI that daily he passes through the Lower Tankbund Road to reach office. ‘I have to tie a hand kerchief around nose to keep the foul smell away. It causes severe headache, and other ailments. During the rainy season accidents occur. I myself fell down once. The dumping yard should be shifted at the earliest.’
Deputy GHMC Commissioner Krishna Shekar told THI that there was no proposal at present to shift the dumping yard, while admitting that it was causing problems which have been brought to the corporation’s notice. ‘We are trying to solve these problems. To prevent accidents during monsoon precautionary measures, like alerting the GHMC teams, are being taken up. These teams ensure that there are no mishaps on the road involving bikes’, he stated.
