Hyderabad: Medical Council of India (MCI) should be held responsible for medical negligence resulting in loss of precious lives, said the speakers at a conference on 'Medical Negligence and Right to Health'.
The conference was organised by People for Better Treatment (PBT), a non-profit organisation fighting for better healthcare system in the country. The PBT launched its activity in Hyderabad on Sunday.A Addressing on the occasion, PBT founder Dr Kunal Saha said that the number of cases related to medical negligence were increasing in Hyderabad, despite the city being a hub of medical tourism.
Rampant non-ethical medical practice was another aspect of growing concern which deprived people of their right for good health. "With corporate hospitals and new institutions cropping up at a fast pace in Hyderabad, increasing number of patients are being duped," Kunal said.
Former chief secretary Kaki Madhava Rao said that he was also a victim of medical negligence. He said his wife was subjected to suffering, due to the negligence."Hospitals have become industries. Industries talk only about turnover and profits. But, the medical profession deals with human life and it cannot become a business. Since 1980, the standards of medical profession have fallen drastically in Hyderabad," he said and added that strong regulation should be introduced to ensure accountability for medical negligence.
Dr Narayan Reddy, Professor of Forensic Medicine at Osmania Medical College, said that the number of patients visiting government hospitals have fallen drastically since 1980 due to medical negligence. "Education standards and ethical values are lacking in medical colleges in the State. Measures should be taken to restore the standards," he remarked.
Dr Raghuram said that patients were being referred to a particular diagnostics centre or a doctor by another medical practitioner in return for share. He expressed that medical reference should be only on professional competence. Regional Passport Officer Srikar Reddy called for high standards in medical accountability to prevent medical negligence.
