Hyderabad: In a step forward in the fight against the state bifurcation, YSR Congress Party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy on Sunday launched an indefinite hunger strike from Chenchalguda jail, where the party leader has been languishing in connection with his disproportionate assets case since May last year. Jagan sat on fast in his cell in the morning and refused to take breakfast. He will continue the agitation demanding that the Centre maintain the status quo if it cannot do justice to all the regions while dividing the State. He decided to undertake deeksha for the united Andhra after his mother and YSRCP honorary president Vijayamma was forced to call off her six-day fasting on health grounds in Guntur on Saturday.

The jail authorities, who deployed heavy police security, said Jagan began fast at 6 am without taking breakfast. He sat on dharna in the special cell where he was lodged. He did not relent despite several requests made by jail authorities not to go in for the fast. Resorting to fast by a prisoner can be viewed as an offence as per the state Prison Rules and this matter will be dealt with according to the jail manual.
