Asmita celebrates birth centenary of people’s poet

Hyderabad : The 100th birth anniversary of people’s poet Padma Vibhushan Kaloji Narayana Rao was celebrated at Potti Sriramulu Telugu University under the aegis of Asmita (Resource Centre for Women). Describing him as the ‘Sata Vasantala Kavi’, academicians inspired by his writings identified him as the individual who had challenged the boundaries of so-called ‘standard language’ in every poem he had penned.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Guest and Telugu University former VC, Dr N Gopi equated him with great poet Yogi Vemana, who put his words with great transparency and did justice to his work. Rather than bound by the standards of the language, he reflected the ideas in regional fervour and flavour. “He was a father figure, who was remembered as the patron by large sections of the region”, he pointed out.

Dr Gopi, who spent part of his life with the great poet said that his poetry reflected the angst against the feudal forces of Telangana and witted against the powerful. He was democratic personality, who wrote against the injustice. “The humanist and humourist, who on one hand weighed empathy and on the other hand abhorrence”, he recalled. Dr Katyayani Vidmahe described Kaloji as the self disciplined man, who acted as ‘opposition’ in literary field during his time. She said that he reflected the women’s problems with utmost understanding in his writings. According to her, the famous book ‘Na Godava’, was actually ‘every one’s problem’. “His writings reflected the democratic notions of us”, she noted.

Dr Nandini Sidda Reddy felt that all his poetry was compilation of questions, which made people to ponder. Vasantha Kannabiran, feminist poet and founder member of Asmita Olga also spoke on the occasion.
