AP sees spurt in crime cases against women

Hyderabad: Stringent laws introduced to deal with the crimes against women seem to have no deterrent effect. Violence against women in the State is still on the rise. The state witnessed a considerable increase by 19.62 per cent in crimes against women with 823 cases registered during January-June 2013 compared to 688 in the previous year.

According to the statistics recorded at Central Crime Records Bureau (CCRB) and submitted to National Crime Bureau of Records, as many as 1,06,724 cases were registered across the State under different Sections of the Indian Penal Code(IPC) in the first half of the year 2013, while 15,868 cases were recorded for sexual humiliation over women.

In violence against women, Cyberabad topped with 103 cases of which 24 were of either rapes or attempt to rape, while 68 cases were registered in West Godavari district and 61 in Karimnagar, 58 in Hyderabad and Khammam respectively. In addition to that, 990 missing cases were also reported in different districts. Overall crimes against women rose steeply by 24.14 per cent.

Delayed justice

When it comes to justice, for many reasons, only few of the accused are awarded suitable punishments. Investigation into the cases takes much time due to which the accused often get acquitted allegedly by trying to influence both law and police officials. Investigating officials claim that collecting evidences and examining witnesses is a time taking process. For instance, 81 of 111 cases registered (up to July 2013) under different police stations limits of Cyberabad are still being probed. Police filed charge sheets in just 12 of them, while 18 of them are being trailed. None of the accused has been found guilty so far.

In the last six months, the total number of crimes increased by 14.29 per cent as against last year’s crimes in the State. A total of 58, 907 cases were booked for crimes out of the IPC. At the same time, 83,371 cases are under investigation. A whooping 3,16,149 cases are under trial in different courts, while 27,551 non-bailable warrants (NBW) are under pending.

Robberies up by 14%

The cases of heists and burglaries are comparatively higher than the last year figures. While robberies recorded 14.04 per cent increase, house burglaries witnessed increase by 19.80 per cent when compared to figures registered in the previous year. On the other hand, murder cases decreased by 7.93 per cent.

But, killings for property increased drastically by 23.66 per cent. Meanwhile, 1.75 per cent of cases under SC, ST atrocities laws were registered. Similarly, 22, 891 road accidents claimed 7,912 lives, while 28,323 persons were injured.
