Hyderabad: Workers of different political parties staged protests in the Old City on Sunday, seeking justice for a polytechnic student who was allegedly raped repeatedly by the canteen owner at the college where she was studying. They demanded action against the accused, Satya Prakash Singh, who had allegedly kept her in confinement at three places over a period of 17 months. The ordeal of the girl that caught the attention of the public went viral on social websites forcing the police to plunge into action.
The victim lodged her first complaint with the Santoshnagar police on September 4. As no action was taken by the police, the girl accompanied by the MBT Corporator Amjadulla Khan, the station again and filed another complaint on September 14.
The police acted promptly on the second complaint and took the accused into custody.
They called for the call data of the mobiles of both the accused and the victim as part of an investigation into the case. The victim also complained against the management of the private polytechnic college and a doctor for helping the accused try to hush up the case. Santoshnagar Station House Officer KVM Prasad said that a case of abduction and rape was booked against him and the accused was remanded to custody.
The police are verifying claims of the accused that he was her lover. All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) urged restraint, and cautioned the people against attempts to whip up tensions on this count. GHMC Mayor Md Majid Hussain and some officials are pursuing the case with the officials concerned, said the party sources. It is learnt that the police had detained the accused for a day last year when the victim’s parents lodged a complaint against him when she was missing. The police booked only a missing case and later let him off.
