The South Central Railway (SCR) booked 2.66 lakh people for penalty in December which is 17.22 per cent higher than the cases detected in December 2013. 89,236 cases of ticketless travelling, 79,426 cases of irregular travel and 97,749 cases of un-booked luggage were booked last month.

Irregular travel includes travelling on transferred ticket, adults travelling on child ticket, non senior citizen travelling on senior citizen tickets and general/season ticketholder traveling in reserved coaches etc. An amount of Rs 8.62 crore was realised towards ticketless travelling, irregular travel and un-booked luggage, registering an increase of 25.34 per cent.

Cumulatively, during the period from April to December 2014, 22.62 lakh cases were apprehended. These include 7.06 lakh cases of travelling without tickets; 7.88 lakh cases of irregular travel and 7.69 lakh cases of un-booked luggage. An amount of Rs 73.67 crore was realised from the offenders, which is 18.36 per cent more than the penalty realised during the same period in 2013.

Surprise checks carried out by flying squads of the divisions and headquarters and fortress checks conducted under direct supervision of the senior officials at major stations helped monitor ticketless travel.
