Over 15,000 lanterns lit up the sky at Gachibowli on Friday. It was a precursor to the Hyderabad Lantern Festival 2015, which will be held on February 14. 1,00,000 Lanterns, in association with the Cyberabad Police, took up the initiative for the empowerment of women in the beedi rolling industry in Adilabad. The beedi workers, who are primarily women, have been languishing in the industry for decades with poor results for themselves.

1,00,000 Lanterns is working to train women in making lanterns to provide them with better livelihood and eradicate child labour. Speaking on the occasion, Rakesh Vanka, founder of 1,00,000 Lanterns, said, “The sky lanterns are an integral part of all Asian countries, especially India. It has been my dream for a while now to make Hyderabad the destination for a world-class lantern festival and have it listed in the top fests of the world.

I’m very pleased to see my dream slowly turning into reality with the support of so many wonderful people, especially the steadfast Cyberabad Police who have lent us their immense and invaluable support, without which the event in such a large scale would not have been possible.”
