Given the importance and the beliefs associated with January 24, people from diverse fields are eagerly looking forward to the D-Day.

First the fact-January 24 is the most auspicious day for performing marriages this season, according to Hindu calendar. Not just that. The next auspicious day is only after a gap of three months. Given the importance and the beliefs associated with January 24, people from diverse fields are eagerly looking forward to the D-Day.
Any marriage day will have a cascading effect with many raking in the moolah, save perhaps the parents of the bride-to-be as they will be desperate to raise funds for conducting a lavish marriage, the dowry and other related expenses that are almost mandated during traditional weddings.
Tailors, tent suppliers, florists, travel agents, electricians, sweepers, caterers et al will enjoy the benefits of any marriage ceremony because they all will raise the charges pretty sure that the seasonal income will come with or without murmurs of protest.
On the significance of the day, Prasad Rao, a prominent city-based priest points out, “Modalu and Pushkaralu follow in the next three months. These are considered inauspicious.” Since the sunya maasam (inauspicious month) is considered as a chaotic duration, astrologers advice people to desist from embarking on new tasks like construction activities, marriages, upanayas or opening a new business.
It is not surprising that hundreds of marriages have been lined up for January 24. Stakeholders who are expected get direct or indirect employment are gearing up for the windfall. After all, it spells a materialistic boom like no other. Shankar, who owns a community hall in Dr AS Rao Nagar, says, “We have been booked by two marriage parties. It is tough to make arrangements one after the other. But from experience we can vouch that there will be no hiccups or setbacks.
It will be a smooth affair.” Narsimha Reddy who supplies tents, chairs and crockery and other marriage materials, says, “I have to cater to three clients on that day. To ensure timely delivery, I have hired contract workers. I have also arranged for extra vehicles to transport all the goods.”
“It’s not just a big day for the bride and groom. It’s a day when we make a lot of money by playing in various marriages,” quips Uday, who owns Malleshwari Band in Malkajgiri. Similarly, Md Ayub from Shameem Travels claims that many people have approached him for cars for the bride and groom.“We have arranged for special shehnai cars,” he says. Whether marriages are made in heaven or not is beside the point because for these folks it ushers in a heavenly bliss. .
