Good things come in small packages. The saying could not be truer in the case of this year’s horticulture expo at Necklace Road. Three bonsai stalls are the centre of attraction of all the visitors. Many who are visiting the stalls enquire about the plants and ask many related questions. “A lot of women wish to learn bonsai. We sell small plants and are priced reasonably. The bigger plants are only for display,” says Suchhiitha, a vendor.

Another star attraction is a fruit-bearing tamarind plant. Suchhiitha says that it is one of her favourites along with another manila tamarind and that she has no plans of selling them. There is also a stall named Shree Bonsai’s. The husband-wife duo G Madhusudan Reddy and Lalitha Shree started working on bonsai plants 26 years ago. With over 3,000 plants at their nursery and 200 varieties, they have not been able to put many rare ones on display.

“We hail from a farmer’s family from Mahubnagar district. The idea of working on bonsai came to us when we realised that even with less rainfall, many native Indian plants can grow,” says Madhusudan. “Today there are enough books and the internet is a boon for people who take up bonsai but when we started, there were no pots also and we learnt it the hard way,” he added.

To the question that bonsai actually stymes the growth of plants, Suchhiitha, says, “On the contrary, we feed them well, give a proper shape and beautify the plants. Moreover, people cut roses and only then do they grow well. Then one has to trim the plants on hedges.”
