The nation has seen a lot of comedians on screen and stage. Amit Tandon has been one of India’s most celebrated names in Indian standup comedy. Stand-up comedian Amit Tandon is in town and will perform at the Taj Vivanta tonight. The artiste feels that the country has always appreciated humour and can handle a joke directed towards them
The nation has seen a lot of comedians on screen and stage. Amit Tandon has been one of India’s most celebrated names in Indian standup comedy. Popularly known as ‘The Married Guy’, Amit has found his way into standup comedy after being a father of two children. With over a 100 performances across Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chandigarh and a brief stint at Singapore under his belt, Amit is a regular at the Best of Standup lineup at The Comedy Store, Mumbai.
He also opened for Dan Nainan's tour of India. He conceptualised and is also the host for 'Grandmasters of Comedy', one of the longest running comedy nights in India. Standup comedy scene in India has been one that was growing and has reached quiet its peak. Amit feels, “India has always been one that has appreciated humour and especially after the AIB Knockout, India, has proved that they can handle a joke directed towards them.
The Indian audiences welcome comedy with open arms. One just has to have a knack to give their audience a very good first laugh and the rest will just fall in its place.” Amit is glad to see how standup comedians today are using the new digital technologies to the max to get themselves popular. “Today’s popular names like Kannan Gill and Biswa Kalyan have used the digital media wisely to popularise their act.
For a budding comedian it takes a minimum of two years to figure out the stage and be prepared for standup comedy. Being a standup comedian is different from being a funny friend. You have to make a whole set of strangers laugh as a comedian. And that’s the most challenging part,” he added.
Just to have a good sense of humour and skills isn’t enough to be a slapstick comedian. It takes a great deal of preparation before one has to go up on stage to pull off an act good enough to put ones audience in splits. Amit does a standard check before he takes to the stage.
“I usually do a thorough background check of the place and audience. I use either Hindi or English depending on the city I’m performing at, and if it’s a corporate event, I make sure I find out if it’s okay to pull one or two jokes on the CEO of the company itself,” he said. Amit Tandon’s shows are mostly titled ‘Family Tendoncies’, pun intended. He will be giving a show here in the city today at the Taj Vivanta, Begumpet.
