Nature is the living visible garment of God. The last spectacle of which people of the twin cities are likely to grow tired is the Hussainsagar Lake. It offers a world at once different, a world sunlit and infinitely varied and starred by bright lights. It is truly the beauty spot of the twin cities with lush green trees all around but, unfortunately, every so often weeds were once sprouting in it marring its natural beauty, for some, and enhancing it for others.

Some say that without the weeds, water lilies and lotuses the lake would be just a wide sheet of water and that weeds actually relieve the monotony. But some others, including the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad, seemed to think that the first step towards beautification of the city should be removal of these weeds.

At that time youths had also been mobilized for the “weeding out operation.” Ironically the operation, though undoubtedly successful, had apparently led to ‘bigger weeds.’ All the same, the citizens are content day after day to stand on the Tank Bund and to gaze at the water, the pleasure boats and sometimes boat races. Te Tank Bund continues to inspire the denizens and enlarge their horizon.

Hemmed in by hillocks on two sides and the Tank Bund on the third, the lake, weeds or no weeds, attracts tens of thousands of people every evening. There they sit, watching the lake-reflected big resplendent sun sink, and the water iridescent. They feel transported to some putative planet where Nature reigns supreme in all its grandeur, where the coarse-grained hand of the materialist has not reached so far.The lake, silvery with fish, pulsating with life, is a veritable refuge from the atrophied aspect of urban life. A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
