City-based Hope Trust is keen to open a centre in Meghalaya as drugs and alcohol abuse is a serious concern in the North East. The trust currently provides treatment and rehabilitation to chronic alcoholics and drug users. Rahul Luther, founder and executive trustee of Hope Trust, asserted that the problem of drug addiction was common throughout the country but the biggest problem in Meghalaya was alcohol.

He informed that his centre provided a 12-step treatment and also focused on families of the affected persons. “Treatment in our centre is mainly through counseling, yoga and meditation,” he added. Reacting to the query about various products available in market which claim to help people in de-addiction, he said that such claims were fake since even the best rehabs can achieve only a 47 per cent success rate. Claiming that prohibition does not work Luther said that Gujarat is a dry state but most of his clients come were from that state.
