The festival of colours is a big no for residents of Srirangapuram

Mahabubnagar: While the whole country is gripped by Holi fever and people are getting ready to revel with colours and bhang, here is a village that keeps itself aloof from all the festivities. It may sound quite strange, but playing Holi is a taboo in Srirangapuram village of Pebberu mandal in the district.

While the rest of the country is busy splashing colours, the residents of Srirangapuram shun the festival as it is completely banned here. This has been the tradition for several years and the reason for this is not hard to find. According to tradition, the festival is banned in this village owing to the presence of the sacred Sri Ranganathaswami temple, which is as famous as Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple at Srirangam in Tamil Nadu.

Every year, exactly on the day of the Holi festival, the Brahmotsavams of the temple is held. On that particular day, the Pubba star appears and it is considered improper to set ablaze Kamadeva, a tradition during Holi. Speaking to the media here on Wednesday, temple priests Aravindacharyulu and Vamsikrishnacharyulu said they had been following this tradition for the last several years.

The people of the village do not celebrate Holi as it causes inconvenience to a large number of devotees who come here to take part in the Brahmotsavasms. Some of the villagers the village would get a bad name if they splash the coloured water and powder on devotees who came to the temple and that was why they refrained from playing Holi.
