It has been months since the State Government announced its plan to issue Food Security Cards (FSC), but the intended beneficiaries continue to draw monthly rations on their white ration cards. It is reported that over 9.4 lakh applications were received for the FSC and most of these documents are still under verification, which is likely to be completed by April.

“Scrutiny and verification process is being taken up on 8,69,000 applications and the remaining are pending due to insufficient documents and data. We expect the FSCs to be issued sometime next month,” said Bharati Hollikeri, chief rationing officer of Hyderabad.

On one FSC a person can avail 6 kg of rice at Re 1. A family is entitled to receive half-kilo of sugar at Rs 6.75, 1 kg of wheat at Rs 7, 1 kg of wheat-flour at Rs 16.50, 1 kg of red gram at Rs 50, 1litre kerosene to single cylinder holders at Rs 15 and 4 litres of kerosene to non-cylinder holders every month.

“To avoid cases of mis-utilisation that are being reported in certain areas we have implemented bio- metric system in 45 of the 873 ration shops in the city. We are likely to extend the same in a phased manner to other shops as well. Complaint boxes would be installed at the ration shops to address consumer grievances,” Bharati added.

Bharati stated that for the time being a list of the beneficiaries would be displayed at ration shops. “Beneficiaries can avail subsidised rations at the current rate by providing their bank account and Aadhar card details. Beneficiaries can also know the status of their applications at Mee Seva Kendras by furnishing their Aadhar card number and other details,” she explained. Bharati also appealed to the beneficiaries to pay the charges prescribed by the government in the Food Security Act in order to avail the facility.
