City docs honoured for high operation success rate
A team of doctors, comprising Dr Girish Warrier, Dr Meena Trehan and Dr Kavitha Chintala, were felicitated by Sangita Reddy, joint managing director, Apollo Hospitals Group, on Friday at Apollo Health City. A team of doctors, comprising Dr Girish Warrier, Dr Meena Trehan and Dr Kavitha Chintala, were felicitated by Sangita Reddy, joint managing director, Apollo Hospitals Group, on Friday at Apollo Health City. The paediatric cardiology team had achieved the rare milestone of performing a hundred fontan repairs with 98 per cent success rate for single ventricle defect, a complex congenital heart condition.
In India, 3,000 to 5,000 children are born with single ventricle defects. Single ventricle defects are complex heart diseases with very large holes in the heart and one of the lower chambers of the heart is often rudimentary. Such children would need multiple operations called fontan repairs to survive beyond a decade.
