Renowned spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi, popularly known as Amma, arrived in the city on Sunday as part of her Bharat Yatra. The yatra began in North Kerala which concludes on April 4 at New Delhi where she will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On Sunday Amma distributed educational scholarships titled ‘Vidyamritam’ to 1,000 poor students which is worth Rs 1,500 each and pension to 500 widows and the destitute in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana titled 'Amrita Nidhi' which is each worth Rs 1,400. She held satsang, bhajans and meditation sessions as part of the programme.

Pradeep Nambiar, press coordinator of Mata Amritanandamayi Math, said, “Amma's initiatives in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh were undertaken by the math in Mahendra Hills where several welfare schemes for the amelioration of the poor and deprived sections of the society were taken up. During the floods in Kurnool in 2009, Amma sent a relief team including volunteers from Hyderabad ashram center to console the victims and to distribute food, blankets, utensils, bedding and clothing. Doctors from AIMS, Cochin, accompanied by a tele medicine ambulance and a fully equipped ambulance attended to around 20,000 patients and distributed medicines worth of Rs l crore.”
