Demanding total prohibition in Telangana, auto and taxi drivers staged a dharna at Indira Park on Sunday against the liquor policy of the State. At the protest, the agitators shouted slogans like “Sabse Kharab, Sharab, Sharab, KCR Hosh Mein Aao - Sharab Hatao” and so on.

Addressing the protesting auto and taxi drivers, Telangana Auto Drivers Joint Action Committee (TADJAC) convener Mohd Amanullah Khan declared that he would go on fast-unto-death if the government failed to take a decision to enforce total prohibition on liquor before the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections.

Admitting that the development and welfare schemes of the government are very good, Amanullah said that the liquor policy of the government needs to be reconsidered because it has gone a step forward by reopening toddy compounds. He also alleged that the government was giving much importance to the revenue generated from liquor sales and disregarding the interests of the poorest of the poor.

“Unless the government enforces total prohibition, the chief minister’s goal of transforming the backward Telangana State into golden one would remain a distant dream only,” Amanullah observed. Further pointing out the inefficiency of government in imposing the ban on pan masala, gutka and smoking in public places, Amanullah said that there is an immediate need to put a halt on these unhealthy practices. TADJAC leaders J Ravinder, Shanawaz Khan, MA Saleem, Shivanandam, Yaseen, Sathi Reddy, Kamalakar Reddy, Syed Mahboob, Mohd Azeemuddin, Mujahed Hashmi and Syed Ghouse were also present at the protest.
