Development works have begun at the Mir Alam Tank and its vicinity by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Apart from measures to improve the quality of the water body, the civic body aims to have three entry plazas, play equipment, a cafeteria, stalls, an amphitheatre and a theme park at the tank.

“Construction of compound wall, landscaping and other beautification works are being taken up in the foreshore area. Besides, the development of walking tracks on the peripheral bund and bicycling tracks on the tank ring bund covering a length of 6.5 km is underway. High jet fountains would be installed in the water spread to provide aeration and surveillance cameras would be fixed for security purposes,” said a GHMC spokesperson.

The project is said to cost nearly Rs 40 crore and the works are in progress in a phased manner. A thick layer of hyacinth covers a majority of the tank, hampering the beauty of the lake. Also, the lake water is polluted as drain water is released from the nearby colonies. Many locals complain of stench and the lake posing many health hazards. They hope that the civic body’s efforts to beautify the tank will relieve them of their worries.
