Long gone are the times when the only sources of a good laugh were mimicry, the shows on TC and silly puns in movies. With YouTube channels and independent standup comedians, there is a lot more on the platter now. Long gone are the times when the only sources of a good laugh were mimicry, the shows on TC and silly puns in movies. With YouTube channels and independent standup comedians, there is a lot more on the platter now. Ahead of the April Fools’ Day, CityTAB caught up with Rajasekhar Mamidanna and Avinash Agarwal from the city-based comic act Funny Side Up.

On how the act came together, Rajasekhar says, “Funny Side Up is a five piece act. We wanted to give the people a good laugh and formed the group two years back.” Rajasekhar and Avinash have not only performed in Hyderabad but have also made people laugh in other cities like Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai. Comparing their experiences, the comedians feel that the comedy scene in Hyderabad is yet to parallel cities like Delhi and Bengaluru.

“It is evident from the frequency of shows in other cities and in Hyderabad. For many Hyderabadis TV shows are still the only source of comedy, they are not familiar with standup comedy,” says Rajasekhar, noting that the crowd pouring in for standup comedy is slowly increasing.

On the way the group goes about with preparing for a show, Avinash says, “Our preparation differs for different shows. Also, we modify our jokes to cater to the demography of audience we are performing for. For theme-based shows, we come out with individual content on the given theme, sit back and collaborate to come out with the best content possible to make the audience fall off their chairs.”

The five-piece act’s puns majorly revolve around the irony of human behaviour. “The subject of our jokes is the unusualness of human behaviour. The jokes revolve around observations which none of us can miss out on,” Rajasekhar says. “While we want to give the people a really good laugh, we also want them to think and reflect back on our observations,” Avinash adds. The group will be performing at Mariott Hotel on Wednesday. We are not fooling you, seriously.
