GHMC threatens to seize properties of tax defaulters
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to crack the whip against 4.5 lakh erring property owners beginning Monday to collect property tax dues amounting to Rs 130 crore.

The civic body, earlier in this month has served red notices to defaulters in all 24 circles, asking them to clear their property tax dues within the stipulated time of seven days, beginning from the date of issuance of the notices.
At the failure of clearing the existing dues even after receiving red notices, the GHMC warned of executing a distress warrant to seize their movable properties under the section 269 (2) of the GHMC Act.
A senior official from the civic body informed that a special drive is planned against property tax payers, whose cheques have bounced.
The GHMC as on Friday has an amount of Rs 44.39 crore entangled in cheque bounce cases for the financial year 2015-16. In previous financial year 2014-15, the amount locked up in cheque bounce cases was Rs 47.34 crore.
In a related development, the civic body along with IALA (Industrial Area Local Authorities) has issued notices to Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal for not clearing property tax dues worth Rs 14.26 crore on Friday morning.
The amount would be shared in the ratio of 60:40 by IALA and GHMC. In last year too, a team of GHMC officials descended on Uppal Stadium and sealed it for non-payment of property tax amounting to Rs 12 crore.
As on March 18, GHMC has collected over Rs 736 crore as property tax. Last year, it was Rs 813 crore during the same period.
A senior official of GHMC said, they were on the right track regarding collection of property dues, and the target of Rs 1,100 crore would be achieved with a plus or minus of Rs 100 crore.
Meanwhile, tax collectors have been directed to meet defaulters personally or reach out to them either through phone or SMS for clearing pending taxes.
"Every bill collector in each of the 24 circles has a target of Rs 10 crore by this month end," said the official.
