Maradona on a television show Thursday night wore a t-shirt that read “Luisito Estamos Con Vos,” which translates to “Luis we are with you”. Luiz Saurez of Uruguay is banned by FIFA after the biting incident happened in a match against Italy on 24 June.

Maradona in an interview in support of Saurez against his suspension.

In the interview he said “The FIFA sanction is shameful”. “They have no sensitivity towards the fans. They might as well handcuff him and throw him in Guantanamo.”

"A player works hard the whole year to be able to play at the World Cup, and Luis scored 29 goals [sic] and they kick him out of the World Cup like this. It's unbelievable.

"Remember [Zinedine] Zidane and what he did in that [2006] World Cup final? FIFA then gave him the Golden Ball.”

Maradona had faced similar kind of trouble Suarez is involved in.He had a longtime cocaine addiction. He was removed from the World Cup 1994, after testing positive for five variants of ephedrine, a stimulant banned by soccer's international governing body. Maradona was also charged with tax evasion by the Italian Government in those days.

He knows what it’s like to operate outside the parameters of rules.“It hurts that they have cut short the career of a lad who is a winner. It's an excessive suspension. FIFA cannot talk about morals to anyone.

Maradona interviewed Uruguay's President Jose Mujica during the program who continued to assert that no one except Uruguay understood the issue.

“We Uruguayans are full of anger. Those coming from below do not understand anything,” Mujica said.

“We kicked out Italy and England. No doubt they lost a lot of money.”

Mujica claimed FIFA used “a different standard” to judge certain countries.

“That's what hurts and angers us the most,” Mujica concluded.
