Jerusalem: Israeli police and stone-throwing Palestinians clashed on Friday in occupied East Jerusalem, as thousands of mourners carried the body of 16-year-old Mohammed Abu Khudair, whose was killed in what is believed to be a revenge attack.

Khudair's body was discovered on Wednesday in a Jerusalem forest about an hour after he was forced into a car by unknown kidnapper. Israel riot police were out in force in East Jerusalem, prepared for more street violence after days of unrest over after the teen was laid to rest in the Arab neighborhood of Shuafat. His funeral coincided with the first Friday prayer services of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. Israeli authorities say they are investigating whether Khudair's killing was carried out in retaliation to the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teens, blamed on Hamas, buried earlier this week.

The Israeli military conducted airstrikes aimed at Hamas. Israeli officials told local media a cease-fire is being negotiated with Hamas, but warned that any agreement is contingent on whether rockets continue to be fired into Israel. Hamas spokeswoman Isra al-Modallal could not confirm a cease-fire was imminent, but told that Hamas leaders do not want the conflict to intensify. Israeli officials have also stressed they do not want a further escalation with Hamas. Israeli military spokesman Peter Lerner said Thursday the troop reinforcement along the Gaza border is defensive. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that the troops will "act forcefully" if Gaza militants do not stop launching rockets.
